The CIPE Europe and Eurasia (E&E) Department is committed to addressing challenges to democracy in the Europe and Eurasia region through innovative and localized approaches that focus on advocacy, civil society, and market-oriented democratic reform. The Intern will work closely with CIPE’s E&E team to assist with research on digital economy trends in the three countries of South Caucasus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) strengthens democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market-oriented reform. CIPE is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy and an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since 1983, CIPE has worked with business leaders, policymakers, and civil society to build the institutions vital to a democratic society. CIPE’s key program areas include enterprise ecosystems, democratic governance, business advocacy, anti-corruption & ethics, and trade. 

Internship opportunity: Intern, Europe and Eurasia Department

Reports To: Program Officer, Europe and Eurasia

Timeframe: Spring 2022 (anticipated start date: early February 2022)

Description: The CIPE Europe and Eurasia (E&E) Department is committed to addressing challenges to democracy in the Europe and Eurasia region through innovative and localized approaches that focus on advocacy, civil society, and market-oriented democratic reform. The Intern will work closely with CIPE’s E&E team to assist with research on digital economy trends in the three countries of South Caucasus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increased understanding of e-commerce and digital economy reform in the South Caucasus 
  • Enhanced research, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Strengthened writing skills, demonstrated through blog posts and development of social media content
  • Exposure to project management, including productivity tools, project monitoring, and reporting
  • Broader understanding of the role and operations of international development organizations

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Assist the Caucasus team in monitoring political and economic developments in the region
  • Conduct research on digital economy strategy in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia
  • Track developments in the work of peer organizations on digital economy in the region
  • Assist the team with short-term and long-term reporting on project activities
  • Contribute to department’s social media outreach with guidance from Program Officer and Program Associates
  • Attend webinars and online events related to digital economy, challenges to democracy, and other developments in the region
  • Assist with projects under the portfolio as required (meeting minutes, email correspondence, provide website content, blog posts, etc.)

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Graduate or undergraduate student (junior-level or higher) majoring in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Public Policy, Information Technology, or another related field
  • Demonstrated interest in the political and economic trends of Europe and Eurasia, especially in relation to digital transformation and digital economy
  • Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze information
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in a regional language preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications required; familiarity with Outlook and Teams is a plus
  • Positive, passionate, and motivated to learn more about the region and digital economy

Spring 2021 interns will have the option to work in a hybrid format (from the CIPE office and remotely) or fully remotely. This is a paid internship with part-time hours.
